Overview

Everyone who has thought about upgrading their bedroom and purchasing a new mattress has stumbled upon the name Casper in their search. As one of the most prolific and respected names in the bed-in-a-box industry, Casper has spent years asserting themselves as one of the top brands for anyone seeking a comfortable, supportive, and inexpensive new mattress.

Trend-setters within the world of mattresses, Casper is one of the first e-commerce businesses that began selling their products exclusively online, and over the years they have grown and expanded into a brand that can be found while browsing online, walking through major retailers like Target and Costco, and promoted by some of the top sleep experts.

The mattress that started it all is their Casper Original, a flagship design that is available in both an all-foam and hybrid option. Coming in at 11” tall, this mattress is built using premium, high-quality, and even eco-friendly materials and has undergone numerous re-designs over the years in order to ensure it always remains one of the top-of-the-line offerings for all sleepers.

Those who have found previous mattresses have left them feeling less-than-rested in the morning will benefit from Casper's Zoned support system which reduces aches and pains, and creates a more comfortable surface to sink into each night. Crafted to support proper spinal alignment, the layout of the Casper Original will help relieve pressure around your hips and shoulder areas so you can sleep through the night and actually wake up feeling rejuvenated and ready to tackle the day.

Sizes & Pricing

Size-wise, both the all-foam and hybrid models are exactly the same with both sitting at exactly 11” in height. While their inner components may be different this doesn’t impact the dimensions, although you will notice that the hybrid model does weigh around 7 to 14 lbs more depending on which mattress size you select. At such a negligible increase in weight, this shouldn’t impact anyone’s decision when making their final selection.

As for the available sizes, both the all-foam and hybrid Casper Original come in most standard models, ranging from Twin all the way up to California King. There is no split option available for either King, however, but for the vast majority of shoppers this shouldn’t matter since this is one of the least requested sizes.

  • Twin - Foam / Hybrid                $595 / $695
  • Twin XL - Foam / Hybrid          $695 / $795

Construction

The main difference between the Casper Original All-Foam and the Casper Original Hybrid is that the Hybrid includes the use of innerspring coils in order to provide additional support, increase airflow and breathability, and give you some extra lift and bounce. The first two layers of both models are identical and use the same materials, but it is the bottom, base layer where that difference will be noticed.

  • Cover
Incorporating planet-friendly materials, the all-foam and hybrid models come wrapped in a soft-to-the-touch cover that is made from recycled polyester, upcycled cotton, rayon, and lycra fabrics. Breathable and lightweight, this cover will help the mattress to breath and prevent it from retaining heat throughout the night.
  • Comfort Layer
Casper only uses CertiPUR® certified foams, and the comfort layer is no exception. Relying on their unique Airscape™ foam, this breathable layer has extra perforations to help circulate air more effectively making sleepers feel cool even on hot nights. This comfort layer also does an amazing job of contouring to the body so you get a personalized feel that is tailored to relieve pressure in the places you need it most.
  • Support Layer
Proper spinal alignment is integral to a great night’s sleep as it means you aren’t left with aches and pains each morning. Too many mattresses fall short in this area, and even with added support features can increase back pain or leave you tossing and turning. To combat this, the Casper Original has created an advanced ergonomic support system that relies on softer foam around the shoulders and legs as well as firmer foam in the lumbar region, giving you the right amount of lift or sinkage to keep your back healthy and happy.
  • Base Layer
For the all-foam model, the base layer is made from a very firm foam that has been specially engineered for durability and longevity. Helping to prevent sinking and sagging over time, this layer will support your whole body year after year.As for the hybrid model, this is the layer where you will find the individually wrapped innerspring coils. Providing additional bounce, airflow, and support this beneficial base is a great choice for couples, heavier individuals, and anyone who wants the additional comfort of a cooler and more responsive mattress.

Rating

Rating the Casper Original is a bit tricky since the All-Foam and Hybrid options will perform a bit differently due to their unique materials. With that said, Casper has done a great job of keeping the key elements similar between them, allowing customers to enjoy the same overall feel with the main differences coming down to breathability, added support, and personal preference.

  • Firmness
    7 out of 10

Surprisingly, both the foam and hybrid models have a very similar firmness with both sitting around a 7 on the scale. A bit firmer than the average memory foam mattress, this is the ideal feel for anyone who likes the sensation of sleeping on top of their mattress as opposed to in it and it will offer a nice balance between being supportive and comfortable. This firmness is also great for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and combo sleepers, although lightweight side sleepers may find it doesn’t have quite enough “give” to allow them to stay in that position for the entire night.
  • Temperature
    3 out of 5 (Foam)
    4 out of 5 (Hybrid)

Memory foam mattresses are notorious for sleeping hotter than innerspring models, and the Casper Original is no exception. Although the top layer of Airscape™ foam does do a good job of helping to offset this in the all-foam model, it simply isn’t as breathable, nor does it feel as cool as the Casper Original hybrid.
  • Pressure Relief
    4 out of 5

Thanks to the ergonomic zoned support layer both models do a fantastic job of helping to relieve pressure in common areas on the body. By making the top and bottom portions of the mattress softer, the shoulders and legs can sink in a bit more deeply while the curve of lower back and full spine receive a firmer foam that promotes proper alignment. This is a great mattress for anyone who suffers from back pain, and can help give you a better sleep overall.
  • Motion Isolation
    4.5 out of 5 (Foam)
    3.5 out of 5 (Hybrid)

Having a mattress that prevents you from feeling motion is essential to anyone who shares their bed with another person. Every time your partner tosses or turns it can cause you to feel it and wake up, leaving you extra tired and grumpy the next day. The Casper Original All-Foam model manages to absorb most movement making it a good choice for couples. The Hybrid, however, has coils that do move more, so while it does reduce some of the motion, it won’t prevent it completely.

User Reviews

Saying that the Casper Original is an award-winning mattress is no exaggeration, as this is a company that is known for taking home first place in almost every mattress category year after year. Called "One of the Best 25 Inventions of 2015" by Time Magazine, Casper has seen immense success with their mattresses and have continued to rate highly among sleep experts as well as their customers.

With Architectural Digest calling the Casper the “Perfect Mattress According to Science”, it’s no surprise that those who sleep on it frequently leave 5-star reviews online. Holding a steady 4.6 stars out of 5 on Google, and with nearly 20,000 ratings provided, this is a mattress that you can feel confident about purchasing.
